personal interests community mentoring oregon minds
In 1990, I had the opportunity to mentor a group of seven academically gifted middle school students in a national competition to test
their creativity and communication skills.
The students were mentored in creative thinking, writing, graphic presentations, and the use of power tools.
The students then wrote their own script and designed and constructed their props for the show which had, as some of it's
requirements, that the normally inanimate props must be able to show emotions.
The team won on a local level and went on to represent the Lincoln County School District at the state championships.
The team did very well, but were inched out for going to nationals when a tape recorder malfunctioned.

"The concept for the skit that the students came up with was drama in the life of a toothbrush.
The story began in a toothbrush factory with workers over-seeing the birth of a new boy toothbrush
After transfer to a market, the boy meets and falls in love with a beautiful girl toothbrush next to him on the shelf.
The students designed the toothbrush with manually animated eyes and mouths to frown, smile, and cry real tears."
